Freelance Proposal Audit Checklist
12 things to check before you hit send. Miss one and you might lose the job.
Most freelancers lose jobs not because their work isn't good enough — but because their proposal is missing something the client needed to see. Use this checklist before you send anything.
01
Structure & Clarity
- 1.Opens with the client's problem, not your background
- 2.Includes a specific scope of work (not "web design" — "3-page Webflow site with contact form")
- 3.Has a clear timeline with start date and delivery milestones
- 4.States exactly what's NOT included (prevents scope creep)
02
Pricing & Terms
- 5.Price is shown as a total, not an hourly estimate
- 6.Payment schedule is specified (50% upfront / 50% on delivery, or equivalent)
- 7.Revision rounds are defined (e.g. "2 rounds of revisions included")
- 8.Includes a proposal expiry date (creates urgency, protects you from price changes)
03
Closing & Follow-Up
- 9.Ends with a clear next step (not "let me know" — "reply to this email to confirm")
- 10.Has a brief “why me” section tied to the client’s specific project (not a generic bio)
- 11.Proof of past work is included or linked — even one relevant example
- 12.A follow-up email is already drafted and scheduled for 3 days later
Or skip the checklist entirely.
